The wait is over!

Tomorrow, March 24, 2023, the university will be releasing decisions for First Year applicants applying for Fall 2023.

This time of year is an extremely exciting and often disappointing time for many. Unfortunately, given the size of our applicant pool relative to our incoming class, the majority of our applicants will not receive the decision they had hoped for.  If you are one of the many who do not receive the news you are hoping for, just know that this by no means reflects your accomplishments, character, or future potential. We have the utmost confidence you will be successful wherever you go.

This part is always challenging for us as an admission team. We spent the last several months getting to know you, your story, and saw how you have been killing it in high school. Getting to know you has been a privilege and we wish we could admit more. At the end of the day, our decisions come down to space;  we can only admit a small portion of applicants, and we cannot offer admission to all of the amazing students who apply to USC. This year was especially competitive, with over 15,000 applications submitted to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering alone. A new record.

Listen to our latest podcast about admission decisions.

You will be going through a wide range of emotions when admission decisions are released. This podcast, featuring current Viterbi admission staff, will discuss what you may experience in the next few days and what your next steps may look like.

Your Journey to USC Viterbi is Not Over!

If you are still determined to pursue an Engineering or Computer Science degree, there are two options in front of you.  You can formally appeal our decision, and/or you can work to become a strong transfer applicant for next year.

Appeals

You have the option to appeal your admission decision. If you believe we have failed to review your case appropriately and want us to consider new and compelling information not included in your original application, you may submit a formal appeal for reconsideration of our decision. Your application will be reviewed with additional information, but please be aware that decisions are rarely overturned.

To appeal the decision, please follow the instructions included in your decision letter FAQ document on your USC Applicant Portal.  Be sure to follow those instructions carefully and do not miss the deadline of April 10 to appeal.

Transferring for Fall 2024

More than 20% of the Viterbi School of Engineering’s incoming class each year are transfer students. The application process is simple and you can transfer after just one year! You could be part of the incoming class for Fall 2024.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering has dedicated counselors (us) to assist students interested in transferring to USC.  Check out the Viterbi Transfer Admission page to familiarize yourself with the process.

Here are the basics:

  1. Follow our Transfer Plans to take the right classes (Calculus, Lab Based Sciences or Programming Courses, The USC Writing Requirement equivalent, and a few GE equivalents) at your college or university.
  2. Find transferable courses through our Transfer Planning Guides and/or Articulation Histories with other colleges around the country. We strongly recommend attending a California community college. We hold agreements with these schools and can help you determine exactly what will transfer to USC.
  3. Get good grades (As and Bs) throughout all classes. As a transfer applicant, your college coursework is what matters most.
  4. Apply as a transfer student for Fall 2024.

Let us help!

You don’t have to do this on your own!  Starting in mid-May, we will begin posting transfer info sessions that you can register for. These info sessions will help you better understand the transfer application process, and will give you a chance to ask your questions.
