Hi! My name is Karissa Ginoza and I am currently a rising sophomore studying mechanical engineering with a pre-professional emphasis in medicine at the Viterbi School of Engineering. For as long as I can remember, I have always preferred hands-on learning and experimentation. Engineering allows me to utilize both learning methods on a regular basis which allows me to enhance my problem-solving skills and ability to always strive for improvement. Viterbi’s extensive access to resources and world-renowned professors also provides the perfect atmosphere to encourage learning and innovation at the highest level. The rigor of the classes coupled with the approachability of professors makes the Viterbi School of Engineering one of the best.
Ultimately, I chose mechanical engineering for its versatility and wide scope of engineering topics covered. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest types of engineering, which allows mechanical engineers to explore a vast range of disciplines. Personally, I am interested in fluid systems, sustainability, and residential real-estate development. These topics may all seem to be unrelated, but pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering allows me to pursue all of them simultaneously.
In addition to majoring in mechanical engineering, I am completing all the pre-requisites to apply to medical school. I am currently at a crossroads when it comes to exactly what I would like to pursue after my undergraduate years. Although I am deeply motivated and intrigued by the engineering field, I also encompass a strong interest in pursuing a career as a physician, specifically a dermatologist. I currently work on a Hawaii Permanente Medical Group Website that encourages Hawaii high school students to explore, and possibly pursue, a medical career, and through this opportunity, I have gained insight and inspiration to do the same. I have always admired the leadership, critical thinking, strength, and sympathy that physicians develop over their career. I look forward to providing peace of mind and uplifting health to residents in my community if I ultimately decide to pursue my medical career aspirations.
Even though this is an unusual undergraduate career track to pursue, the advisors, resources, and opportunities that Viterbi provides makes everything completely possible. The advisors are eager to help sort out any difficulties and there are a vast range of clubs that allow students to immerse themselves in different interests. I look forward to the endless career opportunities that Viterbi has to offer. Go Trojans!
