As a Maui girl, I spent most of my life living in what many would consider “paradise:” magnificent beaches, beautiful mountains, daily surf sessions, and more. Little did I know, USC would become my new paradise—my home away from home—with its vibrant energy, opportunities, and tight-knit community.
Discover USC
“Discover USC” completely transformed my view of the Trojan Family and USC as a whole. After just two hours of touring and chatting with students, I fell in love with USC and saw a life of opportunity, fun, and prosperity here. I could sense complete genuity from the tour guide and immediately knew that he truly enjoyed every second he spent on USC’s beautiful campus. A week later, I received a personal, hand-written postcard from the tour guide, expressing his optimism that I would, too, choose USC as my future home. Ever since then, I knew that the people, dedication, and idea of community at USC was unmatched by any other university in the nation. It has come to a point where if any of my clothing says USC, there will be at least one person beyond the campus walls that says, “Fight On!”
Academics and the Trojan Family
Specific to mechanical engineering, USC Viterbi School of Engineering is also one of the best in the nation, with extensive research, internship, and networking opportunities that will prepare me for my career pursuits in the near future. I was stunned by the sheer amount of opportunity to work with professors regardless of experience. The CURVE program allows students to work closely with a professor, developing research, communication, and other crucial skills to succeed. There are a multitude of research labs, increasing the chances of finding one that best fits you. As for me, I optimistically look forward to joining the CURVE program next year as a sophomore.
USC’s emphasis in cultivating the Trojan Family is clear through its 100+ student clubs and recreational sports. I have since joined the Hawaii Club, Society of Women Engineers, Science Outreach, MEDlife, Surf Club, and the USC Club Swim Team. These clubs have served as a means to meet people outside of my major and classes and create strong bonds with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I also recently joined intramural pickleball to enjoy the fun of intramural sports while still getting in some exercise. As you can see, the opportunities are endless.
Aside from the Trojan Family, I was utterly impressed by the campus. The red brick buildings provide continuity throughout the extensive campus, and its red tint reminds me everyday to proudly be Trojan. The USC Village is home to delicious cafés and restaurants like Cava and Dulce, which have proven to be a perfect midweek treat amidst stressful exams and projects. Weekly farmers markets and events keep me entertained and content even within the walls of USC. The weather is also pristine California weather, with the sun shining throughout almost the entire year.
After completing my freshman year, I have no doubt that I made the right decision in choosing to be a Trojan. The numerous events throughout the first week of school, manageable class sizes, and socializing opportunities have introduced me to new people and allowed me to create special relationships with those around me. Choose USC and I can guarantee that you will love it… just like I do! Fight On, Future Trojan!
