Hello everyone! My name is Ivan Recinto, and I am a 3rd year at USC studying Environmental Engineering (ENE). I am a proud Filipino American, as my parents immigrated from the Philippines. I was born in Anaheim, CA, and grew up in western Orange County.
Now, why Environmental Engineering? I chose my major as a combination of my two interests as a teenager: STEM and the environment. Whether it would be taking all the AP science classes or becoming Math Club president in high school, I knew I wanted to do a type of engineering in the future. Additionally, outside of school, I devoted over 1000 volunteer hours at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Through my experience, I felt a sense of stewardship towards animals and their habitats; I needed to protect the environment so that living ecosystems could thrive to their full potential. Combining my high school STEM background and environmental stewardship, I wanted to continue my passion with Environmental Engineering.
The tipping point for me choosing USC t
o pursue Environmental Engineering was during Admitted Students Day. Especially with the Spirit of Troy Marching Band playing USC’s iconic songs, I really perceived a sense of community and vibrancy on campus. The idea of community continued during New Student Orientation, where I met my Orientation Advisors and first USC friends that I still remember today.
Currently, I still enjoy th
e community USC provides during my studies. Relating to my major, I participate in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) where I can design systems and promote initiatives for sustainability. Relating to my heritage, I am involved in Troy Philippines, a cultural club on campus where I can connect with my Filipino culture. At USC, I am proud to be pursuing my passions in such a diverse environment!
