Artificial Intelligence at USC Viterbi
Beginning in Fall 2026, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering will welcome its first class of students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Developed across multiple engineering departments, the program reflects Viterbi’s approach to tackling complex challenges through collaboration and strong technical foundations.
Students will study how intelligent systems are designed and applied, building expertise in areas such as machine learning and data-driven modeling while also examining the broader implications of these technologies. The curriculum emphasizes both technical depth and the responsibility that comes with developing systems that shape real-world outcomes.

A Field Still Taking Shape
As a recent EdSource article notes, undergraduate AI majors are still relatively new across California, with only a small number of universities offering them today. That newness creates a different kind of academic experience, one that is closely connected to ongoing research, emerging technologies, and evolving industry needs.
At Viterbi, students entering this field will do so at a time when many of the fundamental questions around AI are still being explored. This creates space not only to learn existing approaches, but also to contribute to what comes next.
Looking Forward
Engineering at USC Viterbi has always been about preparing students to engage with complex systems and make meaningful contributions. Artificial intelligence extends that mission into new territory, where technical innovation intersects with social impact on a global scale.
As universities expand AI education in response to growing demand, USC Viterbi’s new major reflects both the direction of the field and the opportunities ahead for students ready to engage with it.
We are so excited for our first incoming co-hort of Artificial Intelligence students to enter in Fall 2026!
Fight On,
Brooke
