Why ISE?
Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) is often described as the “engineering of business.” It perfectly blends the technical aspects of creating products while considering some of the managerial or administrative concerns. Outside of just making a good quality project, ISE aims to understand how users will interface with the product and the market trend for it. ISE ensures that solutions are not just efficient but also functional and user-friendly.
For Devon Njonjo, ISE was the perfect fit for his passions. Initially, as a Computer Science and Business Administration (CSBA) major, he felt that the program did not fully align with his passions, which dealt with business and engineering. “ISE is truly the intersection of business and engineering,” Devon explains. It allows him to apply his technical knowledge and business skills when working with people to provide the outcome or service they would like.
The Versatility of ISE
One of the aspects Devon loves most about ISE is its “freedom.” As opposed to other engineering disciplines, which usually lead down specific industry paths, ISE allows him to shop around and explore different industries to determine the best fit for him.
Beyond academics, Devon is involved heavily in student organizations like Brothers Breaking Bread (B.B.B.) as the Vice President and a Senator and PCI chair for NSBE. These roles help to sharpen and optimize his ability to understand processes, leadership, and the framework of organizations that translate into his future career.
Beyond Engineering
While ISE is a significant part of Devon’s life, he also finds time to develop his passions outside academia. Soccer has been a long-lasting love that he has pursued since childhood. At USC, he continues to play pick-up games at Brittingham Field. He appreciates the cultural diversity that the sport brings, stating, “It’s a beautiful microcosm of cultures and techniques of playing” when international students from Hong Kong, Mexico, or even Nigeria may be playing. He also encourages students to explore LA. “Coming from a small city, I appreciate hopping on the metro and exploring a new part of LA every weekend without running out of things to do.”
Looking Ahead
As Devon continues his journey in ISE, he remains passionate about technology, business, and problem-solving. Whether leading student organizations, exploring LA, cooking, or listening to his favorite new song, he embodies the versatility that makes ISE a dynamic major.
