The City of Angels can be an expensive one, especially for college students looking to get around on a budget. Even booking a Lyft from the airport to campus can feel like a dent in our wallets. But all hope is not lost! Exploring LA is for everyone. Here are some places I’ve explored (via public transit) and had a great time while still being able to keep my expenses low.
⭐⭐
The Broad: The Broad is an art museum in downtown LA with free admission. Even if you’re not an art fanatic, going here with some friends is a great way to spend an afternoon off campus. My favorite part is the huge dining table set that you can walk under.
America’s Got Talent Showing: Shockingly, tickets to shows like AGT are free for everyone! Having grown up watching this show, being able to see the production that goes into what we see on TV was such an exciting experience for me.
LA Public Library: Though I’m a bookworm, I went here with some friends who aren’t into books and they had a great time. The library constantly hosts events and has a lot of exhibits that everyone can enjoy. I was super intrigued by their life-size reconstruction of a prison cell. If you’re also a book lover, I’d recommend The Last Bookstore as well.
LA Live: I went here this December and adored the holiday spirit that surrounded this place. Complete with a decked out Christmas tree, beautiful music, an ice skating rink, and tons of people, this place feels like an embodiment of LA during the holiday season.
Hollywood Hike: The hike to the Hollywood sign is an iconic experience for any first-timers in LA. For someone who is not at all a hiker, this was the perfect level for me. My favorite part was walking alongside a group of people who were horseback riding along the hike. This one is a little longer of a journey on public transportation, but if you set aside a good chunk of time, it won’t disappoint!

As I write this post and share with you my fun (and free!) experiences, I’ve realized that most of the memories I hold close to my heart have come because of the people I’ve explored these places with. I encourage you all to give some of these places a shot with the people you love as well!
