One of my biggest extracurricular time commitments this year is my role on the Regional Executive Board (REB) for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). I am the Region VI Chair this year, which means I lead the REB, which has around 20 people who work on implementing programming and initiatives and planning two conferences. I also represent the west coast chapters on the National Executive Board (NEB).
Besides leading meetings, as a Regional Chair I create a vision for the Region, participate in strategic planning conversations for the National Society, and have got to travel all over the US for meetings and conferences. Below are descriptions from some of my trips!
National Transition Meeting: Alexandria, VA
After being elected to National office, the entire new board meets at the NSBE headquarters in Virginia to transition into our roles, start planning for our term, and meet each other.
National Leadership Conference: Boulder, CO.
The National Leadership Conference is where NEB and REB leaders receive leadership training, learn about their roles, and bond.
Regional Leadership Conference: Nike HQ, Beaverton, OR
During this conference, the REB meets with chapter leaders to provide leadership and role training. We were lucky to have Nike sponsor the conference this year at their headquarters. I was able to speak to other collegiate students, leaders at the company, and receive lots of free merchandise.
Fall NEB Meeting: Kansas City, MO
At our Fall Meeting, the NEB was able to tour the site of our upcoming Annual Convention and discuss updates and plans for the year.
Fall Regional Conference: Los Angeles, CA
Although I technically did not need to travel for this conference, this conference is one of the main responsibilities of the REB. We were in charge of the budget and programming of this conference. We hosted competitions and a career fair as well. A lot of time and effort went into this 2-day event with over 600 attendees.
Joining the REB has been one of my most challenging but rewarding involvements in college. Regional leadership in NSBE is a really unique experience that provides a lot of connections and opportunities for growth. I’ve also really enjoyed being able to meet other Black engineers and play a part in helping them succeed.
