Starting my journey at USC as a freshman in mechanical engineering was both exhilarating and overwhelming. From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew I was in for a challenging yet rewarding experience. I remember the first week vividly – exploring USC’s beautiful campus, meeting new friends, and feeling the weight of my future on my shoulders. The transition from high school to college was no small feat.

Being honest, classes were not the most intense. Physics, calculus, and intro to engineering courses did not feel like a huge leap from IB-level math and science. However, I quickly realized that time management would be crucial. Learning how to balance academic rigor with the social aspects of college life was a skill I had to develop early on.

Not only had I just moved to an entirely new continent, but I knew no one in my major, or even on campus.  I had to actively seek out new friends and connections. At first, it was intimidating – finding people with common interests, adjusting to the fast pace of life on campus, and creating that sense of “home away from home.” But I soon discovered that everyone was in the same boat. I started attending study groups, campus events, and club meetings, where I met people who became not only study partners but close friends. These relationships became the foundation of my USC experience.

Having a strong support network was essential. During those tough weeks of exams and assignments, whether it was sharing late-night study sessions or just taking a break to grab food at the dining hall, these friendships helped me navigate the challenges of freshman year. Just as importantly, when I am homesick and missing my bed, it was having people who understand how I felt, and people to make new memories with, that made my time at USC as enjoyable as it was.

Looking back, my freshman year was all about finding that balance between independence and collaboration and turning a new place into my second home.
