Don’t get me wrong… we are all here at this wonderful institution to pursue our engineering goals and obtain our degrees, but there is so much opportunity to explore outside of the engineering field. Whether it be minoring in a passion or an interest, being on any pre-professional track, or just joining clubs that excite you, USC truly has everything to offer.
Adding a Minor or Pursing a Pre-Professional Track
USC Viterbi makes accessibility to advisors incredibly high to properly serve Viterbi students. The advisors provide a very personal experience tailored exactly to your needs and concerns. For me, I entered USC as a Mechanical Engineering student on the Pre-Medicine track. Although mixing MechE with medicine would be quite the challenge, my advisor helped to create the most ideal schedule containing all the engineering graduation requirements along with all of the pre-requisites for taking the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
While pursuing a pre-professional track or adding a minor on top of engineering may seem like a daunting task, it is definitely doable, and the staff will set you up for success. Not to mention, the plethora of clubs covering a variety of hobbies and interests will boost your well-rounded nature tremendously.
Get Out There!
Despite the engineering field’s reputation of extensive technical knowledge and work, it is important to socialize with peers and individuals outside of your classes as well. For me, my friends were the primary factor in curing my homesickness at the beginning of my freshman year. There are so many unique personalities to meet and so many ways to meet them! Join clubs, go to mixers, use social media, and just say hey to people in class or at Dulce while getting a delicious breakfast burrito.
Engineering can be time-consuming, but there are still so many opportunities to grow as a person outside of your field! Just remember… whether it be academically or socially, expand your horizons!
