Before coming to USC, I knew that I wanted to continue singing in college and meet other people who shared the same passion and love for creating music. During the second week of my freshman year, I auditioned for Asli Baat which is USC’s competitive South Asian fusion a cappella group. It was one of the best decisions I could have ever made.
One of the qualities that really attracted me to USC was the Trojan family and the idea of being a part of smaller communities on campus within the large student body. These two aspects are very unique to USC. I’ve been on Asli Baat for almost three years now and looking back at my experience with the team, they are like my second family. I have met some of my best friends through AB, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment singing, competing, bonding, and performing with my team.
As engineers with rigorous classes and technical work, I found that a capella was a way for me to decompress after a long day of classes and homework. Several members on AB are also in STEM-related fields or engineering and we often get together after practice to have late-night study sessions.
Some of my favorite team pastimes are getting Boba after almost every practice during the week, team karaoke nights, traveling to competitions together, and our spring photoshoot at the LA Rose Garden. I look forward to those memorable bonding moments. We’ve also had some incredible opportunities to perform both on and off-campus at Uber LA, USC Conquest, APASA’s talent show, and All Hail a capella. Once a year we also prepare and travel to our big competition at UC Berkeley which is an absolutely incredible experience.
I couldn’t imagine my USC experience without a capella. The team is such a collaborative and supportive community that I know I can rely on no matter what. Regardless of the team you choose, joining a USC a capella team is a great way to meet new people and find that smaller family within the broader Trojan community.
