As an in-state student, it’s pretty easy for me to go home over break! Being from San Jose, I typically take a quick 45 minute flight back home, but here are some options of how to get to Northern California from USC:
- Fly LAX
- Flying through Los Angeles International Airport is arguably the most common travel option for both in-state and out-of-state students! A quick 20 minute drive (without traffic), LAX is a convenient and close option.
- Fly Burbank / Smaller Airports
- My favorite way to go home is flying through Hollywood Burbank Airport! Although it’s a bit farther from USC being a 30 minute drive away, it’s a much smaller airport than LAX. The fastest I’ve ever gone through TSA at Burbank was about five minutes or less which is much easier than LAX would ever be. I’ve also been recommended to go to Ontario International Airport or Long Beach Airport instead of LAX.
- Use Greyhound
- Greyhound is a bus company that will take you up and down California. Ranging from 8-11 hours long and $40 – $100, this is definitely an option if you need something cheaper and don’t make the time. Greyhound also isn’t just limited to California – they have locations across the states!
- Drive
- Living in San Jose, the drive back home is 5 hours without any traffic. The issue with driving home is that if you avoid traffic in LA, you’ll get traffic up in the Bay Area (or vice versa) which can make the drive 6 – 8 hours with stops. That plus the fact that I don’t have a car on campus makes driving not super appealing for coming home for small breaks like Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a break that’s well deserved, and it’s a good time to relax and catch up with family and friends. I hope everyone had a safe and fun break!
