After a few unusually cold weeks (a rarity in Los Angeles), it’s finally starting to warm up around here again, and I’m reminded of everything I love about spring semesters at USC. Something that people don’t talk about too often is how over the course of the fall semester, the days get shorter, the weather gets colder, and by the end you’re walking out of class at 5PM in the dark. Obviously this is not unique to USC, but it’s always a bummer to me. What is a bit more specific to USC, though, is the energy in the air when spring comes back around.

Over the span of a few weeks, we go from a frigid 50º (anyone not from California is probably laughing at this) to a balmy 80º+. You return your pants to the back of your dresser for the next 9 months. You buy a new pair of sunglasses and as you skate to class, the streets are alive with other students playing volleyball, sunbathing, or just doing homework out front of their houses and apartments in the warm breeze. You might sweat a bit on the way to campus, but that’s okay. By nighttime, the air is perfect to have a bonfire or outdoor dinner with friends. Life is good.

It’s feelings like this that I’m going to miss dearly after I graduate this May. I’m just hoping I can preserve the same energy wherever I am going forward—but nothing will replace it exactly.
