My professional experience at USC has truly been a journey. From attending my first career fair to learning how to network effectively, I’ve continued to refine my professional image while keeping up with the demands of my academic life. Along the way, I’ve picked up some valuable insights that have shaped my growth, and I’d love to share the best tips I’ve gathered since becoming a Trojan.

Try, Over and Over Again:

Rejection is never easy, but it’s an inevitable part of professional growth. After applying to dozens of internships and not hearing back from some, I realized persistence is key. Every rejection is an opportunity to reassess and improve. Whether it’s tweaking your resume, refining your LinkedIn profile, or rehearsing your interview skills, each effort brings you closer to success.

Reach Out:

One of USC’s biggest advantages is the Trojan Network—a vibrant community of alumni and professionals who genuinely want to see fellow Trojans succeed. Networking can feel intimidating at first, but it’s a skill that pays off tremendously. I’ve learned to reach out to alumni or peers for coffee chats and ask about their experiences in the industries I’m interested in. These conversations have led me to incredible opportunities, such as discovering new career paths, getting resume advice, or even learning about newly opened positions. While sending that first message can be nerve-wracking, the connections I’ve built have been invaluable to my professional development.

Practice Your Pitch:

The first prompt you’ll often get during interviews or at networking events is: “Tell me about yourself.” It sounds simple, but believe me, it’s not! Crafting a concise, engaging 2–3 minute pitch about who you are and what you’re looking for takes time and practice. When I first started interviewing, I stumbled over this question more times than I’d like to admit. But with repetition—practicing in front of friends, family, or even a mirror—I’ve transformed my pitch into something that feels authentic and polished. A strong pitch can make a lasting first impression, so don’t be afraid to rehearse until it feels natural.

Get Involved:

It took me until my sophomore year to officially join the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)—even though I told myself I’d join during my freshman year. Looking back, I wish I had joined earlier! Being part of SHPE has been an incredible experience, from meeting like-minded individuals to gaining access to career resources I didn’t know existed. Through SHPE, I’ve attended industry events, workshops, and even mentorship programs that have expanded my professional horizons. Joining organizations on campus isn’t just about adding a line to your resume—it’s about immersing yourself in a community that supports your growth.

My time at USC has been a mix of challenges, growth, and exciting opportunities. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that success doesn’t come overnight—it’s the result of persistence, connections, and a willingness to learn. Whether you’re just starting your professional journey or are well on your way, remember that each step, no matter how small, is bringing you closer to your goals.
